  • PREPOSITIONS: ITS CLASSIFICATIONS

Pre শব্দের অর্থ পূর্বে এবং position শব্দের অর্থ অবস্থান। সুতরাং যে word Noun বা Noun-equivalent-এর পূর্বে বসে Sentence-এর অন্তর্গত অন্য word-এর সহিতঐ Noun বা Noun-equivalent-এর সাথে সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে, তাকে Preposition বলে।

  • CLASSESS OF PREPOSITIONS

Preposition-কে উহার গঠন ও কার্যের ভিন্নতা অনুসারে ছয় ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়।

1. Simple Preposition.

2. Double Preposition.

3. Compound Preposition.

4. Phrase Preposition.

5. Participle Preposition.

6. Disguised Preposition.


  • Lets know the types of Preposition with Examples

1.      Simple Preposition: সাধারণতঃ একটি word দ্বারা Simple Preposition গঠিত হয়।

যেমনঃ At. on. by, for, from, with, after, of, off.

2.      Double Preposition: যখন দু'টি Simple Preposition একত্র বা যুক্ত হয়ে একটি Preposition এর মত ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন তাকে Double Preposition বলে।

যেমনঃ into (in+to), within (with+in), out of ইত্যাদি।

3. Compound Preposition: Noun বা Adjecitve বা Adverb এর পূর্বে Simple Preposition যুক্ত

হয়ে যে Preposition গঠিত হয়, তাকে Compound Preposition বলে। Compound Preposition গঠন করতে সাধারণত: on এর স্থলে a এবং by এর স্থলে ৮ বা be হয়।

যেমনঃ across (on+cross),

about (on+by+out),

behind (by+hind),

before (by+fore).

Above (on+by+up),

below (by+low),

along (on+long),

between (by+twin),

beside (by+side).

beyond (by+yond),

4. Phrase Preposition: যদি দুই বা ততোধিক Preposition একত্র হয়ে একটি একক Preposition রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন তাকে Phrase Preposition বলে।

যেমনঃ

on account of,

by dint of,

by means of.

in front of,

in stead of,

look for ইত্যাদি।

 

(b) কখনো কখনো Preposition কোন Adverbial Phrase বা কোন Clause কেও Object হিসেবে গ্রহণ করতে পারে।

যেমনঃ A sound of cry came out from the hut. (Adverbial Phrase)

There is no truth in what you say. (object)

(c) Relative Pronoun, Preposition-এর Object হলে তা উহ্য থাকতে পারে।

যেমনঃ

This is the orphan (whom) we called for.

 


USES OF SOME PREPOSITIONS

1.At, in: বড় স্থান বা সময়ের পূর্বে in এবং ছোট স্থান বা সময়ের পূর্বে at বসে।

যেমনঃ

He lives at Deana in Khulna. He went there at 7 o'clock in evening.

Note: সময়ের পূর্বে in ব্যবহার করলে তারপর the বসে। কিন্তু at ব্যবহার করলে the বসে না।

Night, noon, dusk, dawn ইত্যাদির পূর্বে at বসে এবং morning, evening, afternoon ইত্যাদির পূর্বে in বসে।

 

2. In, into: কোন কিছুর ভিতরে অবস্থিত বা স্থিতিশীলতা বুঝালে in এবং ভিতরে প্রবেশ বা গতিশীলতা এবং রূপান্তরিত

হওয়া বুঝালে into বসে। The students are in the room. They entered into the room. Water changes into vapour.

3. On, in, at: দিন বা তারিখের পূর্বে on, মাস বা বছরের পূর্বে in এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে at বসে। I shall meet you at 5 o'clock on Sunday in January.

4. After, in: অতীত কালের ব্যাপক সময় (period of time) বুঝাতে after এবং ভবিষ্যৎকালে ব্যাপক সময় (period of time) বুঝাতে in ব্যবহৃত হয়।

I returned to my native village after six months. We shall finish the work in a week.

5. In, within: ভবিষ্যৎকালে ব্যাপক সময়ের শেষ মুহূর্ত বুঝাতে in এবং সেই সময় উত্তীর্ণ হবার পূর্বে বুঝাতে within ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমনঃ Mr. Ahad will come in a month. (একমাসের শেষ মুহূর্তে) We will finish the work within a month. (এক মাস উত্তীর্ণ হবার পূর্বে)

6. In, by, before: ভবিষ্যৎকালের ব্যাপক সময়ের পূর্বে in, এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে by ব before বসে। যেমনঃ I shall have finished reading the book by or before 5 p. m. He will come in a month.

7. In, on, to: সীমার মধ্যে বুঝাতে in, সীমার বাহিরে বুঝাতে to এবং সীমার উপরে বুঝাতে on ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমনঃ The Sunderban is to the south of the country. Dhaka is on the Buriganga.

Dhaka City College is in the heart of the city.

8. In, after: Future Tense-এ in এবং Past Tense-এ after ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমনঃ

My father will come from the states in a week.

His father died after two months.

9. Since, from, for: নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে since বা from এবং ব্যাপক সময়ের পূর্বে for বসে। Since দ্বারা শুধু অতীতের নির্দিষ্ট সময় এবং from দ্বারা সব tense এর সময় বুঝায়। Since-এর পূর্বে সর্বদা Perfect বা Perfect Continuous Tense বসে।

It has been raining since morning.

It has been raining for two hours.

10. Beside, besides: "পাশে" অর্থ বুঝাতে beside এবং "ইহা ছাড়া/অধিকন্তু" বুঝাতে besides ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমনঃ He sat beside me. Besides this pen I have two other pens.

11. Between, among: দু'য়ের মধ্যে between এবং দু'য়ের অধিক হলে among ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমনঃ Divide the mangoes between the two boys. Divide the mangoes among them.

12. By, with: যে করে তার পূর্বে by এবং যার দ্বারা (instrument) করে তার পূর্বে with বসে।

যেমনঃ The tiger was killed by the hunter with a gun.

13. On, over: লাগালাগি অবস্থায় উপরে হলে on এবং space রেখে উপরে হলে over ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ The book is on the table. The clock is over the cupboard.

 

 

 

MEANING OF SOME PREPOSITIONS

At

(1) স্থানঃ He lives at Kakrail. (ii) সময়ঃ He came at 3. p. m. (iii) মাত্রাঃ The coach runs at sixty miles an hour. (tv) দিকেঃ He came at me. (v) মূল্যঃ Rice sells at Tk. 20 per Kg. (vi) পরিণামঃ He did it at his own risk. (vii) লক্ষ্যঃ He aimed at the tiger. (vill) মুখ ভেংচানঃ He faced at me. (ix) বিদ্রুপ অর্থেঃ We should not laugh at the poor. (x) তাকানো অর্থেঃ He looked at the picture.

About

(1) বিষয়েঃ I told you everything about this matter. (ii) প্রায়ঃ The train is about to start. (iii) চারিদিকেঃ The news of his death spread all about. (iv) উপলক্ষেঃ I talked to him about the business.

Above

(1) উপরঃ The sky is above us. (ii) উচ্চাসনঃ He is above in the society. (iii) উৎকৃষ্টঃ He is above all corruptions. (iv) বেশীঃ Now the time is above 10 a. m. (v) অপেক্ষাঃ I value character above everything.

After

(i) পরেঃ He went away after having dinner. (ii) পিছু পিছুঃ They ran after the thief. (iii) সত্ত্বেওঃ After all he is a good man. (iv) অনুসারেঃ The shirt Is after my choice. (v) মতঃ Make the dining table after the design.

Against

(i) বিরুদ্ধেঃ He is against me. (ii) পাশেঃ He kept the bag against the wall. (iii) প্রতিকূলেঃ He is swimming against the current. (iv) সংস্থানঃ We should save something against the rainy day. (v) স্থলেঃ Fifty students passed against seventy.

By

(i) পাশেঃ He sat by me. (ii) কাছাকাছি সময়েঃ He will come here by 4. p. m. (iii) অনুসারেঃ What is the time by your watch? (iv) শপথঃ He swore by Allah. (v) কাজের ধারাঃ I pulled him by the ear. (vi) পরিমাপঃ Our class room is 30 feet by 40 feet. (viii) মাধ্যমঃ The letter was written by him.

Note: যাতায়াত বা গমনার্থে By land (স্থল পথে), by air (আকাশ পথে), by water (নৌপথে), by boat, by launch, by steamers, by bus, by train ইত্যাদি।

Behind

(i) পিছনেঃ He fell behind me. (ii) অসাক্ষাৎঃ We should not speak ill of one behind his back. (iii) বিলম্বঃ You are behind time.

Before

(i) সময়ঃ He went away before dinner. (ii) সম্মুখেঃ He stood before me. (iii) চেয়েঃ Prevention before cure.

For

(1) পরিবর্তেঃ He acted for me. (ii) দিকেঃ He left for home. (iii) স্বত্ত্বেওঃ For all his wealth he is dissatisfied. (iv) সময় ব্যাপিয়াঃ I am reading for two hours. (v) পক্ষেঃ I will not speak for you. (vi) মনে করাঃ I took him for a good man. (vii) কারণবশতঃ I could not go to college for my illness. (viii) বিনিময়ঃ Della sold her hair for twenty dollars. (ix) অনুপাতেঃ The boy was pardoned for his age.

From

(1) হতেঃ He has returned from abroad. (11) প্রভেদঃ What is the difference between red from orange. (iii) উৎসঃ We draw inspiration from our martyred soldiers,

In

(1) সময়ঃ I will come in an hour. (ii) স্থানঃ I live in Dhaka. (iii) অবস্থাঃ He is not in good health. (iv) দৃষ্টি রেখেঃ We should work in the interest of the country.

 

Of

(1) জাতঃ He comes of a respectable family. (II) সম্পর্কেঃ Do you know anything of this?

(iii) অধিকারভুক্তঃ It is the car of my uncle. (iv) উপকরণঃ The house is made of brick. (v) সংযোগঃ They live in the city of Khulna. (vi) অভাবঃ He is devoid of courtesy. (vii) কারণঃ He died of heart failure.

On

(i) উপরেঃ The book is on the table. (ii) সম্বন্ধেঃ He wrote an essay on "Jute." (iii) কারণেঃ I

congratulated him on his success. (iv) নির্ভরশীলতাঃ The cow lives on grass. (v) সময়ঃ He met me on Monday. (vi) অনুসারেঃ I acted on my teacher's advice. (vii) অব্যবহিত পরেঃ On hearing the news of his mother's death, he went home. (viii) জোরেঃ He was released on the ground of his argument.

1. নিম্নলিখিত Noun-গুলির পর Preposition "For" বসে।

APPROPRIATE PREPOSITIONS

Abide by (মেনে চলা) - Students should abide by their teachers' advice.

Abide with (সংগে থাকা) - He abides with me.

Abide in (বাস করা) -I abide in Dhaka.

Abstain from (বিরত থাকা)- Everyone should abstain from smoking.

Accuse of (অভিযোগ করা) -He was accused of theft.

Abound with (পূর্ণ থাকা) -The Padma abounds with fishes.

Abound in (প্রচুর পরিমাণে থাকা) -Fish abounds in the Padma.

Accede to (রাজী হওয়া) -I acceded to his request.

Account for (কোন কিছুর জন্য কৈফিয়ত দেওয়া) -We shall have to account to God for our deeds.

Account to (কাহারো কাছে কৈফিয়ত দেওয়া) -We shall have to account to God for our deeds.

Admit to (ভর্তি হওয়া) -1 was admitted to Dhaka City College.

Acquit of (বেকসুর খালাস দেওয়া) -He was acquitted of the charge of murder:

Adhere to (লেগে থাকা) - I must adhere to my principles.

Agree with (ব্যক্তির সাথে রাজী হওয়া) -I agreed with him.

Accompanied by (সাথে নিয়ে)-The politician joined the meeting accompanied by his supporters.

Adequate to (পর্যাপ্ত) -This, little amount of money is adequate to my purpose.

Adapted for (উপযোগী) -The story has been adapted for school boys from Gulliver's Travels.

Accountable to (কারো কাছে কোন কিছুর জন্যে দায়ী)- We are accountable to Allah for our deeds.

Afraid of (ভীত) -He is not afraid of anybody.

 

Agreeable to (রুচিসম্মত) -The climate of the place is agreeable to me.

Alive to (জাত) - A politician is always alive to his flatterers.

Allen to (বিরোধী) - Flattery is alten to my nature.

Alarmed at (সন্ত্রস্ত)- I was alarmed at the violence.

Angry with (কারো সাথে কোন কিছুর জন্যে রাগান্বিত)-He is angry with his younger brother.

Annoyed with (কোন কিছুর জন্যে কারো প্রতি বিরক্ত)- The father is annoyed with his son for going to cinema.

Anxious about (চিন্তিত) - Students are anxious about their results.

Ashamed of (লজ্জিত)- I am ashamed of his conduct.

Astonished at (বিস্মিত) - The headmaster was astonished at his integrity.

Appropriate to (উপযুক্ত) - His remark was appropriate to the occasion.

Aware of (অবগত) - Students should be aware of their duties.

Attentive to (মনোযোগী) - Students should be attentive to their lessons.

Affectionate to (স্নেহপূর্ণ) The old woman was affectionate to his son.

Amazed at (বিস্মিত) -The master was amazed at the worker's sense of duty.

Accomplished in (দক্ষ) -The boy is accomplished in painting.

Ambitious of (উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষা) - Nepolean was ambitious of fame.

Attach to (জুড়ে দেওয়া) -I attached the documents to the application.

Alloted to (বন্টন কৃত) -The shares were alloted to the partners.

Amenable to (বাধ্য)- The lady is not amenable to reason.

Access to (প্রবেশাধিকার) - We have access to the Headmaster's.

Affection for (স্নেহ) -The postmaster had affection for Ratan.

Ambition for (উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষা) - Napolean had ambition for fame.

Appetite for (ক্ষুধা) -I have no appetite for food.

Authority on (কিছুতে বিশেষজ্ঞ)- Dr. Shahidullah had authority on Bengali language.

Authority over' (আধিপত্য) -The father has no authority over his sons.

Aversion to (বিতৃষ্ণা)- I have a serious aversion to smoking.

Aptitude for (প্রবণতা)- The girl has a great aptitude for music.

Apology for (ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা)- The student had to apology to the teacher for his misbehaviour.

Antidote to, for or against (প্রতিষেধক) - Paracetamol is antidote to/for/against fever and headache. T

Addiction to (মন্দকাজে আসক্তি) -Addiction to gambling is very bad.

Absence from (অনুপস্থিত)-His absence from the function shocked me much.

Aspire after (উচ্চ আশা করা) -Man aspires after riches.

Assure of (নিশ্চিত করা) - I assured him of my help.

Argue with (তর্ক করা)- Students should not argue with their teachers.

Apprise of (জ্ঞাত করা) -I would like to apprise you of the fact.

Abhorance of (ঘৃণা) - A drunkard has no abhorance of wine.

Abhorent to (ঘৃণা) - Drinking is abhorent to me..

According to (অনুসারে) He acted according to my advice.

B

Bark at (ঘেউ ঘেউ করা) -The dog always barks at a stranger.

Bar to (বাধা) - Poverty is bar to his success.

Based on (ভিত্তির উপর প্রতিষ্ঠিত) - His allegation was based on facts.

Bask in (রৌদ্র পোহান)- In winter people bask in the sun.

Beware of (সতর্ক হওয়া) - Beware of thieves.

Beg of (প্রার্থনা করা) - I beg mercy of the Principal.

Beg for (প্রার্থনা করা) (Pray a person for a thing) The poor beg for alms of the rich.

Believe in (বিশ্বাস করা) I do not believe in overloading my stomach.

Beneficial to (উপকারী) - Morning walk is beneficial to health.

Bereft of (বঞ্চিত) - She was bereft of motherly affection.

Bent upon (সংকল্পবদ্ধ) He is bent upon going to the meeting.

Bequeath to (উইলের দ্বারা দিয়ে যাওয়া) -My father bequeathed a portion of his land to my mother.

Beset with (বেষ্টিত) -The leader is beset with flatterers.

Bestow on (প্রদান করা) -God bostows His mercy on us.

Blind of (অন্ধ) -The man is blind of one eye.

Blind to (দেখেও না দেখা) He is blind to his son's fault.
