I had two Mothers - two Mothers I claim (আমার ছিল দুই মা- আমি বলি দুই 'মা).

Two different people, yet with the same name. (দুই ভিন্ন মানুষ যদিও একই ছিল নামটা।) 

Two separate women, diverse by design, (দুই আলাদা নারী, আলাদা গড়ন,)

But I loved them both because they were mine. (তবু ভালোবাসতাম দুজনকে কারণ আমারি ছিল দুজন।)

 

The first was the Mother who carried me here, (প্রথমজন ছিল সেই মা যে আমায় এখানে এনেছে,)

Gave birth and nurtured and launched my career. (জন্ম দিয়েছে, লালন করেছে আর জীবন শুরু করিয়েছে।) 

She was the one whose features I bear, (সে ছিল সেইজন যার আদল করি বহন,) 

Complete with the facial expressions I wear. (মৌখিক অভিব্যক্তিতে পূর্ণতা করি ধারণ।)

 

She gave her love, which follows me yet, (দিয়েছে সে ভালোবাসা যা আজও আমায় করে অনুসরণ,)

Along with the examples in life.she set. (সেই সাথে জীবনের দৃষ্টান্ত যা সে করেছিল স্থাপন।) 

As I got older, she somehow younger grew, (যখন বড় হলাম, সেও যুবতী হলো কিছুটা,) 

And we'd laugh as just Mothers and daughters do. (আর দুজনেই হাসতাম, মা ও মেয়ে হাসে যেমনটা।)

 

But then came the time that her mind clouded so, (কিন্তু তখন এল সে সময় যখন তার মনটা হল মেঘলা,) 

And I sensed that the Mother I knew would soon go. (বুঝলাম, যে মাকে চিনতাম, অচিরেই আসবে তার যাবার পালা।) 

So quickly she changed and turned into the other, (তাই দ্রুত সে বদলালো আর অন্যতে পরিণত হল,) 

A stranger who dressed in the clothes of my Mother. (এক আগন্তুক যে আমার মা'র পোশাক পরে ছিল।)

 

Oh, she looked the same, at least at arm's length, (আহ্, দেখতে সে ছিল অনুরূপ, অদূর থেকে অন্তত,) But now she was the child and I was her strength. (তবে এখন সে শিশু আর বল তার আমি।)

We'd come full circle, we women three, (আমরা তিন নারী, পূর্ণ করি বৃত্ত,)

My mother the first, the second and me. (আমার প্রথম মা, দ্বিতীয়জন আর আমি।)

And if my own children should come to a day, (আর একদিন আমার নিজের সন্তানেরা যদি আসে,) When a new Mother comes and the old goes away, (পুরনো মা চলে গিয়ে নতুন মা আসে,) I'd ask of them nothing that I didn't do. (বলবনা তাদেরকে আমি করিনি যা।) Love both of your Mothers as both have loved you. (উভয় মাকেই ভালোবাস, যেমন উভয়ে তোমায় দিয়েছে ভালোবাসা।)
