What is Tense?

Tense is the form of a verb that shows the time of an action or event.

বাংলা: Tense হলো verb-এর এমন রূপ যা কাজটি কখন ঘটেছে, ঘটছে বা ঘটবে তা বোঝায়।

1. Present Indefinite Tense

Structure

Subject + Verb (Base form) + Object

For He/She/It/Single Subject → add s/es

Rule 1: Universal Truth

Always Present Indefinite.

  • The earth moves round the sun.
  • Water boils at 100°C.

Rule 2: After "When", "Before", "After", "As soon as", "Until"

Future meaning হলেও subordinate clause-এ Present Indefinite ব্যবহৃত হয়।

✔ Correct:

  • When he comes, I will go.

✘ Incorrect:

  • When he will come, I will go.

Since = Point of Time

  • since 2020
  • since morning

For = Period of Time

  • for two years
  • for five hours

Rule 4: Had + V3

Past Perfect-এর চিহ্ন।

How to Identify Tense (Tense চেনার সহজ নিয়ম)

Tense চেনার সবচেয়ে সহজ উপায় হলো Auxiliary Verb (Helping Verb) এবং Main Verb-এর Form দেখা।


Present Tense

1. Present Indefinite

Formula: Subject + V1/V1+s/es

চেনার নিয়ম:

  • Verb-এর মূল রূপ (V1) থাকে।
  • He/She/It হলে Verb-এর সাথে s/es যোগ হয়।

Examples:

  • I play football.
  • He plays football.

Signal Words:
always, usually, often, every day, regularly


2. Present Continuous

Formula: am/is/are + Ving

চেনার নিয়ম:

  • am/is/are থাকবে।
  • Main verb-এর সাথে ing থাকবে।

Examples:

  • I am reading.

3. Present Perfect

Formula: has/have + V3

চেনার নিয়ম:

  • has/have থাকবে।

Advanced Tense Rules for HSC, Admission & Competitive Exams

নিচের নিয়মগুলো HSC Board Exam, University Admission, BCS ও Job Exam-এ খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।


1. Universal Truth → Present Indefinite

সর্বজনস্বীকৃত সত্য বা চিরন্তন সত্য বোঝাতে Present Indefinite ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Examples:

  • The earth moves around the sun.
  • Honesty is the best policy.
  • Water boils at 100°C.

2. Historical Present

অতীতের ঘটনা জীবন্তভাবে বর্ণনা করতে Present Indefinite ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Example:

  • In 1757, Clive defeats Sirajuddaula at the Battle of Plassey.

3. Future Time Clause Rule

When, before, after, as soon as, until, unless, if, while, whenever-এর পরে Future Tense ব্যবহার করা হয় না; Present Indefinite ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Correct:

  • When he comes, I will help him.
  • If it rains, we will stay home.
  • As soon as she arrives, I will call you.

Incorrect:

  • When he will come, I will help him.

4. Since and For Rule

Since = Point of Time

  • since 2020
  • since morning
  • since Monday

For = Period of Time

  • for two years
  • for five days
  • for a month

Examples:

  • I have lived here since 2020.
  • I have lived here for six years.

5. Present Perfect vs Past Indefinite

Present Perfect

সময়ের উল্লেখ নেই।

  • I have finished my work.

Past Indefinite

নির্দিষ্ট অতীত সময় উল্লেখ আছে।

  • I finished my work yesterday.

❌ Incorrect:

  • I have finished my work yesterday.

6. Past Perfect Rule

অতীতে দুটি কাজ হলে যে কাজটি আগে সম্পন্ন হয়, সেটি Past Perfect হয়।

Structure:
Subject + had + V3

Examples:

  • The train had left before we reached the station.
  • He had finished the work before sunset.

7. No Sooner...Than

Structure:
No sooner had + Subject + V3 + than + Subject + V2

Examples:

  • No sooner had he reached home than it started raining.
  • No sooner had the bell rung than the students left.

8. Hardly/Scarcely...When

Structure:
Hardly/Scarcely had + Subject + V3 + when + Subject + V2

Examples:

  • Hardly had I arrived when the meeting began.
  • Scarcely had he entered when the phone rang.

9. After + Perfect Form

Examples:

  • After he had completed the work, he went home.
  • After finishing the work, he went home.

10. By the Time

অতীতে একটি কাজ শেষ হওয়ার আগে আরেকটি কাজ সম্পন্ন হলে Past Perfect ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Examples:

  • By the time I arrived, the train had left.
  • By the time she came, we had eaten.

11. It's High Time

Structure:
It's high time + Subject + Past Indefinite

Examples:

  • It's high time we started our journey.
  • It's high time he went to bed.

❌ Incorrect:

  • It's high time we start our journey.

12. Wish Rule

Present Unreal Situation

Wish + Past Indefinite

  • I wish I were rich.
  • I wish I knew the answer.

Past Regret

Wish + Past Perfect

  • I wish I had studied harder.

13. If-Clause Advanced Rules

20. Used To

অতীতের অভ্যাস বোঝায়।

কোনো কিছুর সাথে অভ্যস্ত।

Be used to + Noun/Ving

23. One of + Plural Noun + Singular Verb

Tense Change বলতে একটি tense-এর বাক্যকে অন্য tense-এ পরিবর্তন করাকে বোঝায়, অর্থ অপরিবর্তিত রেখে।


1. Present Indefinite → Present Continuous
