Rosamond, a
little girl about seven years old, was walking with her mother in the streets
of London. As she passed along she looked in at the windows of several shops,
and saw a great variety of things. She wanted to stop to look at them and buy
them all, without knowing their uses or even without knowing their names.
At first
they stopped at a milliner's shop. The windows of the shop were decorated with
ribbons, lace and festoons of artificial flowers.
"Oh,
Mamma, what beautiful roses! Won't you buy some of them?"
"No, my
dear."
"Why?"
"Because
I don't want them. They are not real flowers."
They went a
little further and came to a jeweller's shop. In it were a great many pretty,
bright ornaments of little value, set beautifully behind the glass.
"Mamma,
will you buy some of these?"
"Which
of them, Rosamond?"
"Which?
I don't know which. Look at those earrings, that necklace, those pendants! Any
of them will do, they are so pretty!"
"Yes,
they are all pretty, but of what use would they be to me?"
"I am
sure, Mamma, you could find some use if you only bought them first."
"But I
would rather find out the use first." Though a little disheartened,
Rosamond kept on looking at the shops and tried to persuade her mother to buy
this or that.
"Mamma,
buckles are very useful things. Please buy some."
"I have
a pair of buckles. I don't need any now." So saying her mother walked on.
রোসামন্ড নামের
সাত বছর বয়সী এক ছোট্ট মেয়ে লন্ডনের রাস্তায় তার মায়ের সাথে হাঁটছিল। সে যখন এগিয়ে
যাচ্ছিল তখন বিভিন্ন দোকানের জানালার ভেতর দিয়ে বিভিন্ন বৈচিত্র্যের জিনিস দেখল। সে
তাদের ব্যবহার সম্পর্কে না জেনেই কিংবা তাদের নামটা পর্যন্ত না জেনেই তাদেরকে দেখার
জন্য ও তাদের সবগুলোকে কেনার জন্য দাঁড়াতে চাইলো।
প্রথমে তারা একটি
স্ত্রীবস্ত্র বিতানে থামল। দোকানের জানালাগুলো ফিতা, লেস ও কৃত্রিম ফুলের ফেস্টুনে
দিয়ে সাজানো ছিল।
"ওহ্! মাম্মি,
কী সুন্দর গোলাপ! তুমি কি সেগুলোর কিছু কিনবে না?"
"না, সোনামনি,"
"কেন?"
"কারণ আমি
ওগুলোকে চাই না। ওগুলো সত্যিকারের ফুল নয়।"
তারা কিছুদূর
এগিয়ে গেল এবং এক স্বর্ণকারের দোকানে এল। সেখানে কাঁচের পেছনে স্বল্পমূল্যের অনেক সুন্দর,
উজ্জ্বল অলঙ্কার সুন্দরভাবে সাজানো ছিল।
"মাম্মি,
তুমি কি এগুলোর কিছু কিনবে?"
"কোনগুলো
রোসামন্ড?"
"কোনগুলো?
আমি জানি না কোনগুলো। ঐ যে কানের দুল, গলার হার, গলার লকেটগুলো দেখ! তাদের যেকোন একটা
হলেই চলবে, ওগুলো খুব সুন্দর!"
"হ্যাঁ,
তারা খুব সুন্দর, কিন্তু তারা আমার কী কাজে লাগবে?"
"আমি নিশ্চিত,
মাম্মি, তুমি যদি প্রথম শুধুমাত্র এগুলো কিনতে তাহলে তোমার কোন না কোন কাজে লাগত।"
"কিন্তু
আমাকে বরং আগে এর কাজ সম্পর্কে জানতে হবে।" কিছুটা হতাশ হলেও রোসামন্ড দোকানগুলোর
দিকে তাকিয়েই থাকল এবং তার মাকে এটা ওটা কেনার জন্য প্ররোচিত করার চেষ্টা করতে লাগল।
"মাম্মি,
বন্ধনীগুলো খুবই কাজের। দয়া করে কিছু কেন।"
"আমার এক
জোড়া বন্ধনী আছে। আমার এখন কোনটির দরকার নেই।" এই বলে তার মা হাঁটতে লাগল।

the simplicity of the innocent mind of Rosamond. As she was a little girl, she
was demanding different things she found while walking along the road. But her
mother refused to buy them by saying that these are of no use. Then Rosamond
tried to convince her mother that she could find some use if she only had
