📘 Pronoun Reference and Unclear
Pronoun – Detailed Rules for HSC Examinees
🔹 What is a Pronoun?
A pronoun
is a word used instead of a noun to avoid repetition.
👉 Examples: he, she, it, they, them, this, that, which,
who, etc.
🔍 What is Pronoun Reference?
Pronoun
reference means the pronoun
must clearly refer to a specific noun (antecedent) in the sentence.
✅ Correct Example:
- Rina loves her cat. She feeds
it every morning.
(✔️ "She" clearly refers to Rina)
❌ Unclear Example:
- When Rina talked to Sima, she
was upset.
(❌ Who was upset? Rina or Sima? → Unclear reference)
🚫 Common Pronoun Reference Errors
(with Rules)
🔴 1. Ambiguous Reference
When it is
not clear which noun the pronoun refers to.
❌ Example:
- My cousin met Rina after she
came back from college.
(Who came back? My cousin or Rina?)
✅ Correction:
- My cousin met Rina after Rina
came back from college.
🔴 2. Missing Antecedent
The pronoun
is used, but there is no noun (antecedent) for it.
❌ Example:
- They say that mobile phones are
harmful.
(Who are “they”?)
✅ Correction:
- Experts say that mobile phones are
harmful.
🔴 3. Remote Reference
The pronoun
refers to a whole idea or clause instead of a clear noun.
❌ Example:
- He failed the exam, which made
his parents angry.
(What does "which" refer to? Failing or the exam?)
✅ Correction:
- His failure in the exam made his parents angry.
🔴 4. Vague Use of “It”, “This”,
“That”, or “Which”
These
pronouns must refer to a specific noun, not a general idea.
❌ Example:
- He was late to school. This
caused a problem.
(“This” is vague — what exactly caused the problem?)
✅ Correction:
- His lateness caused a problem.
🔴 5. Pronoun Doesn’t Agree with
Antecedent
The pronoun
must match the number (singular/plural) and gender of its noun.
❌ Example:
- Every student must bring their
ID card.
(“Every student” is singular, “their” is plural.)
✅ Correction:
- Every student must bring his
or her ID card.
✍️ HSC Tips:
🔹 In gap filling with clues or editing
questions, unclear pronoun reference is common.
🔹 Always find the antecedent before choosing the
correct pronoun.
🔹 Use repetition if necessary to make the
meaning clear — especially in writing.
🧠 Mini Practice:
Find and correct
the unclear pronoun:
- When Farid met Anis, he
gave him a book.
- Mina lost her bag. This
made her cry.
- If you don’t study, they
won’t let you pass.
