What is Subject Verb agreement ?

একটি sentence-এ নির্দিষ্ট subject-এর সাথে নির্দিষ্ট কিছু verb বা verb-এর form ব্যবহার করার নিয়মকে subject-verb agreement বলে।

Rule-1:

Sentence এ subject singular হলে verb singular হবে । আর subject plural হলে verb ও plural হবে। 

Example:

• The books in the library are arranged nicely.
• The children in the locality are quarreling daily. 

Rule-2:

And দ্বারা যুক্ত singular noun বা pronoun-এর পরবর্তী verb ও pronoun plural হয়। 

Example:

• Time and Tide wait for none.
• Tasnim and Riya have played Tennis.

Rule-3:

Example:

Noun গুলোর পূর্বে নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যাবাচক বিশেষণ- gross, dozen, pair ইত্যাদি থাকলে verb singular হবে। 

• A hundred years has passed since we met .
• A dozen of eggs is 140 taka .

Rule-4:

বইয়ের নাম মূলত singular এবং এগুলোর পরে verb singular হয়।

বইয়ের নাম, দেশের নাম দেখতে plural হলেও এগুলো মূলত singular এবং এগুলোর পরে verb singular হয়। যেমন: The United Kingdom is a developed country.

Rule-14:

Adjective এর কোনো plural form না থাকলেও adjective-এর the পূর্বে বসলে adjective-টি plural common noun হয় এবং এরপর verb plural হয়। যেমন: The rich are not always happy.  

The United States of America is a developed country. 

Rule-15:

Infinitive, gerund, verbal noun, clause অথবা phrase যখন subject হিসেবে বসলে verb singular হয়। যেমনঃ Swimming is a good exercise.

Rule-16:

Subject এবং compliment যদি ভিন্ন number-এর হয়, verb subject অনুযায়ী বসে।

Rule-17:

Relative pronoun-এর পর verb antecedent অনুসারে হবে। যেমনঃ It is I who am to blame.

Rule-18:

‘There’ দিয়ে বাক্য শুরু হলে, singular number-এর জন্য verb হবে singular এবং plural number এর জন্য verb হবে plural। যেমন: There are many super shops in our area.

Rule-19:

“One of the” – এর পর subject হবে plural, verb হবে singular। যেমনঃ One of the cars is out of service.

Rule-20:

“Very few” এর পর subject হয় plural, verb হয় plural। যেমন: Very few cafes provide brown sugar.

Exceptionals:

1. And দ্বারা যুক্ত subject-গুলো যদি একই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু বোঝায় তাহলে তাদের পরবর্তী verb ও pronoun singular হয় কিন্তু যদি ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু বোঝায় তাহলে তাদের পরবর্তী verb ও pronoun plural হয় – The principal and secretary is invited in the seminar. The principal and the secretary are invited in the seminar.
2. And দ্বারা যুক্ত noun-গুলো একটি মাত্র ভাব প্রকাশ করলে verb singular হলেও কিছু ক্ষেত্রে ব্যতিক্রম রয়েছে। যেমন: Time and tide wait for none.
3. And দ্বারা যুক্ত singular noun-গুলোর প্রত্যেকটির পূর্বে each, every বা no থাকলে পরবর্তী verb ও pronoun singular হয়। যেমন: No boy and no girl is allowed in the park.
4. And-এর পর no বা not থাকলে, and-এর পূর্ববর্তী subject অনুযায়ী verb singular বা plural হয়। যেমন: Mr. Karim and not his brothers have helped the village people.

Rule-3:

With, as well as, accompanied by ইত্যাদি দ্বারা কোনো noun বা pronoun যুক্ত হলে, verb-টি প্রথম subject অনুযায়ী হবে। যেমন: Mr. Alam together with his children has joined the wedding.

Rule-4:

1. Either…or, Neither…nor দ্বারা singular subject যুক্ত হলে verb singular হবে। যেমন: Neither Hasib nor Hasan is at home.
2. Either…or, Neither…nor দ্বারা ভিন্ন number-এর subject যুক্ত থাকলে plural subject-টি verb-এর পূর্বে বসে এবং verb-টি plural হয়। যেমন: Neither you nor your parents have attended the meeting.
3. Either…or, Neither…nor দ্বারা যুক্ত subject-টি যদি ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি হয় তাহলে verb-টি শেষের subject অনুযায়ী হয়। যেমন: Either he or his parents have to deposit the money.

Rule-5:

বিভিন্ন person-এর noun বা pronoun একসাথে লিখতে হলে, প্রথমে 2nd person, এরপর 3rd person এবং শেষে 1st person, এই আকারে লিখতে হবে। যেমন: You, Rafiq and I were told to visit the office immediately. 

কিন্ত দোষ স্বীকার বোঝাতে, প্রথমে 1st person এরপর 2nd person এবং শেষে 3rd person, এই আকারে লিখতে হবে। যেমন: I, you and he are guilty of this.

Rule-6:

Noun এবং pronoun-এর সাথে 1st person থাকলে তাদের পরিবর্তে 1st person-এর pronoun বসে। কিন্তু 2nd person ও 3rd person একসাথে থাকলে তাদের পরিবর্তে 2nd person-এর pronoun বসে। যেমন: You and your friends ran for your school bus.

Rule-7:

Collective Noun-এর পরে verb singular হয়। যেমন: The jury was unanimous in its opinion. 

কিন্তু collective noun-এর প্রত্যেকটি অংশকে পৃথকভাবে বোঝালে এরপরের verb plural হয়। যেমন: The jury were unanimous in their opinion.

Rule-8:

একই দৈর্ঘ্য, পরিমাণ বা স্থান বোঝালে verb singular হয়। যেমন: 24 lakhs is a huge amount.

কিন্তু যদি সংখ্যা বোঝায় তাহলে verb plural হয়। 

Rule-9:

Clergy, cattle, people, aristocracy ইত্যাদি noun-গুলো দেখতে singular হলেও এরা মূলত plural এবং এরপর verb plural হবে। যেমন: City dwellers think country folks have provincial attitude.

Rule-10:

Politics, news, gallows ইত্যাদি noun-গুলো দেখতে plural হলেও এরা মূলত singular এবং এরপর verb singular হবে। যেমন: This news is authentic.

Rule-11:

Spectacles, scissors, shorts, pants, jaws, glasses ইত্যাদি noun plural এবং এরপরে verb plural হয়। যেমন: Her vitals are normal.
